The Future’s Orangery
House extension solution provides light and heat efficiency
My husband and I moved into our beautiful new four-bedroom home about two years ago with our three teenage children. On the ground floor we had a living room, small toilet and a hallway leading to a big kitchen/dining room area. This is where we would all get together for family meals.
After about a year we decided to look into adding an extension to the back of our house. The main reason for this was to create an extra room for us all to eat in as a family while also giving me more space in the kitchen so that I could add some additional cupboards, another oven and a breakfast bar. I always dreamt of having a kitchen from one of those glossy magazines!
We initially spoke with two or three builders who gave us a few ideas and rough prices for an extension with some windows in the roof. One of my concerns was how dark the kitchen would become without the light from the two sets of French doors. We weren’t sure of the best route to take and I started to think that maybe the best option would be to wait a couple more years and move to another house that had what we really wanted.
One morning I had a few friends round for coffee and I mentioned our dilemma.
One friend suggested that I call a company called Kingsbridge Living who had helped her with a fairly complex job a couple of years previously and she couldn’t recommend them highly enough.”

What A Breath Of Fresh Air!
He took a real interest in what it was that we wanted and what our concerns were. He came up with the suggestion of an orangery. Mark showed us some drawings of what our new orangery would look like on his laptop and gave us several options and prices. He explained that by adding an orangery with a large glass lantern roof to the back of our house it would give us the light we wanted while also creating the thermal efficiency of an extension. Also, it would add a substantial amount to the value of the house.
Three weeks later work started. I must say I was a little nervous at the time as I knew the project wasn’t completely straightforward. Our garden is on two levels and our new orangery was going to be built up to the edge of the first level to maximise the size. I thought that the two weeks I had been quoted to complete the job would never be achieved – however, nine days later it was finished.
All of the guys who worked on our home were amazing. Friendly, polite and most importantly excellent at their jobs.
What a difference it has made to our home. We use our new space everyday for family meals, office space and entertaining. Everyone who has since visited has said how beautiful it looks and how it has completely changed the look and feel of our home.
